Khanh Duong of Hicksville finished 42nd place overall.

Congratulations to veteran Hicksville ultramarathoner Khanh Duong, who celebrated his 60th year by logging more miles than any other member of the "Class of 1948" in the 9th annual "Six Hour Sixtieth Birthday Run" staged by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) at Sunken Meadow State Park the morning of Oct. 19.

Khanh turned in a total of 28.09 miles, good for 42nd place overall, and tops among those celebrating their birthday year, more than a mile in front of 60-year old runner-up Joe King of Westbury. Khanh wasn't the only Hicksville athlete to compete in the event - 46-year-old Anna Lau of Hicksville turned in 27 miles to finish in 48th place overall.

With 155 registrants that included 19 members of the "Class of 1948," and 141 runners completing at least one 2.07 mile loop of the Sunken Meadow State Park course, the 9th annual Six Hour Sixtieth Birthday Run on Oct. 19 broke all sorts of records for participation. Near perfect autumn weather conditions helped Race Directors Myron Bellovin and Fred von der Heydt put on a perfect day that attracted a strong contingent of serious ultra athletes, happy 60-year-olds, runners using the venue as a training run for the NYC or Philadelphia Marathons, and several folks who just wanted to run a few loops and hang out.

Everyone was welcome and everyone seemed to have a great time. And remember - 141 runners for an ultramarathon - more than lots of local 5 kilometer races attract!
