Opinion

I am writing to you about my husband, Michael. This morning he saved a woman's life from her house on fire. My husband. My hero.

We live on Wishing Lane in Hicksville and our next-door neighbor's house was on fire. My husband was the only person on the whole block who cared enough to brave the smoke and flames and save her.

We awoke to her tenant banging on our door at about 6 a.m. saying the house was on fire. My husband immediately threw on his boots and ran. The house was engulfed in smoke and he kicked in the front door. Our neighbor was lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. He went in and out four times and managed to get her out safely. He got her to the front yard lawn and covered her with a blanket until the fire department and police arrived.

Our neighbor is a hospice patient and no one happened to be with her at the time of the fire. She is such a sweet woman. Nowadays when people seem to turn "blind eyes" to those who need help, are injured etc. it's nice to know that there are men like my husband who still exist. Brave and few!

I don't know if there is an organization that recognizes local heroes, but I just wanted to say that my husband is definitely one. He saved her life! He should be commended for his unsung actions as she would definitely not be alive had it not been for him. I am very proud of him.
