Hicksville Fire Department was called to the scene of a Wishing Lane home at around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Michael Muth was awoken to his next-door neighbor's upstairs tenant banging on his door in a panic. According to Muth, the house next door was engulfed in flames and smoke and the home's elderly owner was still inside.
Muth ran over to the home and kicked in the front door. He fought back severe smoke to rescue the woman who was lying, unconscious, on the kitchen floor. Muth, together with off-duty correction officer Kevin Imm, pulled the woman out of the home.
Upon arrival, Hicksville Fire Department personnel contained the fire, which is believed to have started from faulty electrical in back bedroom. The woman was transported by Hicksville Fire Department Ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation. A second resident, an upstairs tenant, escaped safely. No one else was in the home at the time of the fire.
The Hicksville Fire Department received assistance at the scene from the Bethpage Fire Department, which responded with a ladder truck. One firefighter suffered a shoulder injury.
The fire is believed to have started in the rear bedroom of the home. The cause, as of press time, was under investigation.
