On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, World War I ended. During the tenuous peace that followed it was customary for the nation, as a whole, to pause each Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to remember the war and honor those who died on what was known as Armistice Day. Today, Veterans Day as it is referred to, is not a day of celebration but rather one of remembrance.
This year, the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County will host Veterans Day services on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Eisenhower Park. The service, which will be held rain or shine, will begin at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m. that same day, services will also take place at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale in honor of those who gave their life in all the wars and conflicts. Veterans' organizations from Nassau and Suffolk will participate in this service.
Additionally, the United Veterans Organization of Hicksville will hold Veterans Day services at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. .11 at Hicksville Memorial Park, which is located at the southside of the middle school. This year's service will be hosted by the William M. Gouse Jr. Post 3211, Veterans of Foreign Wars, along with the Henry Biel Post 46, Masonic War Veterans; Charles Wagner Post 421, American Legion; Gier-Levitt Post 655, Jewish War Veterans; and Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 82. In keeping with tradition, the salute will conclude with the customary rifle salute at the 11th hour - of the 11th day, of the 11th month.
