Hicksville School District officials, along with the Nassau County Police and the Nassau Count Department of Health, are conducting an investigation to determine how and when pins got into a cake made in a middle school class.

A Hicksville eighth grader alleges that he swallowed a pin that was hidden inside a cake he ate during his May 20 Home and Careers class. The middle schooler also alleges that, after taking a bite of the cake, a friend also found a pin in his mouth.

In regard to the situation, Superintendent of Schools Maureen Bright issued the following statement: "The district is involved in an ongoing investigation of an allegation by a student that he swallowed a pin in his eighth grade Home and Careers class. The student received immediate attention at the middle school. The parents were notified immediately and were advised to seek medical attention for their child."

Bright also stated that the district is "cooperating fully with the police investigation of the matter [and that], in the event the claim is substantiated and responsible parties identified, the district will take appropriate disciplinary action."
