Edward R. Corbett passed away on April 25 as a result of injuries sustained from an all-terrain vehicle accident in Upstate New York.
Mr. Corbett, a 39-year-old married father of three, was employed as a vice president with J.E.R. Electric Corp. in the Bronx and in his "spare time" could be found on the field, serving as a coach and director of the Hicksville Baseball Association's (HBA) Senior Division as well as a member of the association's board. He also served as coach of the Long Island Hurricanes travel team.
Mr. Corbett's zest for life and sports and his dedication to the community's youth was revered by town members not only for ability to teach youngsters the fundamentals of baseball but also because he had an ability to make the entire experience more enjoyable. He was always willing to lend a hand, whether it was to help a player with his batting stances or to hit fly balls to outfielders. And Mr. Corbett was an easy person to recognize on the field of the Abe Levitt Complex as he always wore a cap of his favorite baseball team, the Yankees.
According to the Hurricanes website, Mr. Corbett's "devotion extended not only to his own family but to all his friends and all the families of the children he coached ... He was an incredible role model, one whom all of us respected and looked up to - a perfect example of human goodness. Ed touched the lives of so many children with his love, kindness and encouragement and for that we are all thankful."
HBA Director Frank Emanuele added, "He was the first to offer a ride to a kid or buy them a drink at the snack bar. He was just a great guy and I enjoyed being around him."
Mr. Corbett, who was a member of the Knights of Columbus and parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, is survived by his wife Anne, and three children, Ryan, 12, Carly, 10, and Katelyn, 2; parents Richard J. and Gloria M. Corbett; mother-in-law Carol Deposchey; brothers and sisters-in-laws John J. and Andrea Corbett and Richard J. II and Janine Corbett; nephews Kevin, Anthony and Richard III; and a niece, Margaret. The Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home - Hicksville Chapel, cared for the family and a Mass at Our Lady of Mercy was held Friday, May 2 followed by Interment at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Donations to his children's educational fund will be accepted at the Abe Levitt Complex.
