For the second consecutive year, Hicksville's Lady Comets Varsity Girls Basketball Team won the Nassau County Class AA title on March 1 with a determined push during the nail-biting four-minute overtime against Calhoun at C.W. Post on Feb. 27. That the girls had decided to bring the championship home during overtime was clear - the final coordinated team effort left Calhoun behind by a final score of 64-58. The Lady Comets had earned a spot for the second year in a row against the Suffolk Champs, North Babylon's Bulldogs, for the Long Island title.

The March 7 Class AA Championship game against the Bulldogs at Stony Brook began in Hicksville's favor, with the Lady Comets leading by 5 points at the end of the first quarter. North Babylon pulled ahead by 3 points at halftime, and although the Hicksville team pushed to tie 3 more times, including a 51-51 tie with 2:31 before the final buzzer, North Babylon won by three points in an intense 55-52 finish.

"Although the season finished with a loss for our girls in the Long Island Championship game, this season can not be considered a disappointment," said Coach Rich Hinnerscheitz. "I would like to thank my assistant coach, Matt Wildes, for all of his hard work, and the fans for their support throughout the year, but mostly I want to thank the team whose members turned this program into one of the great programs in Nassau County."

He continued, "The team met many goals including this group's first Conference Championship and our second Nassau Class AA Championship. We were ranked as high as third in the state according to New York State Sports Writers Association and finished the year ranked sixth. We had players who reached individual milestones: Courtney Breen reached and surpassed 1,000 points, and Michelle Kurowski reached and surpassed 2,500 career points - the third all-time highest individual in Long Island history."

Congratulations to the Hicksville High School Lady Comets for an(other) incredible Varsity Girls Basketball season!

Post-season update: More great news for the Lady Comets.

Michelle Kurowski has been named Nassau County Girls Basketball Player of the Year and was 10th All-Time New York State player.

Coach Rich Hinnerscheitz was been named Nassau County Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.
