Obituaries

Bertha M. Rowehl, of Mattituck, passed away at her home on Feb. 6, 2008. She was 77 years old and suffered from Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in Queens on April 13, 1930 to Anna (nee Klug) and Edward T. James and was a graduate of the class of 1947 from Farmingdale High School. On May 20, 1950 she married Robert G. Rowehl in Hicksville.

For 20 years she lived in Middle Island before moving to Mattituck thirty-four years ago. She was a homemaker and farmers' wife. When her children were young, she was a Girl Scout Leader, Sunday school teacher and a member of the P.T.A.

In addition to her husband, Robert G. Rowehl; she is survived by six children; Jean Roberson of Mastic, James Rowehl of Middle Island, John Rowehl of York Haven, PA, Susan Krieg of San Diego, CA, Marie Desjardins of Bluemont, VA and Karen Rowehl of St. Louis Park, MN; a brother, Frank James of Fort Plain, NY; two sisters, Marjorie Hohn of Melville and Florence Winne of Pleasantville, NY; and sixteen grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes. Mattituck. The family received friends on February 8 at the funeral home where religious services were conducted by Reverend George Gaffga. Interment was in the Rowehl Family Plot at Plain Lawn Cemetery in Hicksville. Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, Post Office Box 1048, Westhampton, NY 11978.

Gloria R. Gorcey, of Hicksville, passed away Feb. 6, 2008. Retired after 45 years of devoted service as laboratory manager at North Shore Plainview Hospital (Central General). Wife of the late Raymond A. Mother of Scott Gorcey. Daughter of the late Ruth and Richard Fiore. Sister of Bill, Ruth E., Patricia and Richard. Goddaughter of Jeanne and Jim McCormack. Sister-in-law and aunt of many nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Inc. A religious service was held at the funeral home on February 8. Interment took place Feb. 9 at Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn. Joseph J. Rakowski, of Hicksville, died on Feb. 6, 2008. He was a WWII US Navy veteran. Husband of Victoria. Father of Theresa Brophy (Ron), Barbara Rossi (Peter), Victoria Wilkeshoff (Mark), Joseph (Terri) and Marie Elena Kelly (William). Grandfather of David, Jeffrey, Gregory, Billy, Michael, Brian, Kate, Tracy and Emily. Great-grandfather of Zachory and Wesley. The family was cared for by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, Hicksville Chapel. Mass at St. Ignatius RC Church. Interment St. Charles Cemetery.

Louise Largent Carpenter, 90, died on Feb. 16, 2008. She was born to Pearl and Brady Largent on Jan. 26,1918. She met the love of her life, Allen, while attending William and Mary College. They married on July 16, 1937. They lived and raised three sons in Hicksville. During those years, Louise served as a den mother to the Cub Scouts and on numerous PTAs. She was in the ladies auxiliary of the Hicksville Methodist Church, president of the WSCS and choir mother to the church youth choir.

Louise and Allen moved to Cape Coral in 1973. Louise loved her adopted home town and supported her community with her time, talent and energy. She belonged to the library support group, "Little Acorns" and volunteered for 31 years at the Cape Coral Library. She volunteered for 16 years at the Cape Coral Caring Center. She worked on a committee at Faith Presbyterian establishing the "Memorial Garden."

She became a golfer to please her husband and soon fell in love with the game. She was the first in the family of five golfers to have a hole-in-one. Bridge was her passion. She played bridge almost every day of the week.

She was preceded in death by her husband Allen Sr. She is survived by her brother Rinard Largent and sisters Janet Smith and Ellen Perlman and brother-in-law Al Perlman. Other survivors include her son Allen Jr. and daughter-in-law Jane, son Warren and daughter-in-law Linda, and son Irven and daughter-in-law Gretchen. Louise is survived by six grandchildren, Allen III, Thomas, Karen, Albert, Heather, and Keith and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 23 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 4544 Coronado Pkwy., Cape Coral, FL. Louise asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to the Cape Coral Caring Center, 4645 SE 15th Ave., Cape Coral FL 33904 or to the Faith Presbyterian Building Fund, 4544 Coronado Pkwy., 33904. Arrangements by National Cremation Society.
