On Nov. 3, the 8-year-old Hicksville Crusaders played in the footsteps of legends as they took to the gridiron of Hofstra University's James M. Shuart Stadium. Their opponent was the undefeated Uniondale Knights.

As the first half unfolded, it was all Uniondale. On successful possessions, the Knights scored. It seemed that Uniondale would dominate the game. The Knights opened the second half with the ball but the Crusaders defense forced a fumble. Stephen Ketelsen, Hicksville's speedy quarterback, broke a tackle and ran it in for a touchdown. After scoring the extra point, the score was 13-7. The black and orange defense then dug in their heels. Thomas Fleming, Jason McMullen, Peter Capel, Alex Parciak, as well as Nick and Steve Austin all helped to keep Uniondale's ground game halted.

The Crusaders offense took over for a most impressive drive. Andrew Martinez, Taylor Collins and Sam Lipien continually opened holes for Ryan McBride, Connor McPartland and T.J. Delfino to exploit. Hicksville went to the air but was picked off on a great catch by Uniondale's safety. The Crusaders defense once again stood firm giving Hicksville one last chance to score but time just was not on their side. The clock ran out with the Crusaders on Uniondale's 10-yard line, locking the score at 13-7 in favor of the Knights.

Despite the loss, what was apparent since the beginning of the season was witnessed while watching this tenacious team give its all and play with its heart.
