Frank L. Johnson

The members of the Levittown Volunteer Fire Department are mourning the loss of honorary chief and charter member Frank L. Johnson, 87, who passed away recently after a brief illness. Frank moved to Levittown in 1949. Prior to that he served as a firefighter in the East Meadow Fire Department Co. 1 and the Hicksville Fire Department H&L Co. 1. He married Alice Schaefer, daughter of ex-Chief Charles Schaefer of the Hicksville Fire Department.
Frank was instrumental in the creation of the Levittown Fire Department, starting as a charter member of Engine Co. 2 and serving as its first 2nd lieutenant. With the formation of Ladder Co. 6 in 1962 at the nearby new fire station #3 on Wantagh Avenue, Frank became a charter member of Co. 6 and served there as lieutenant. During World War II, Frank served in the Army Air Corps. Frank was a retired employee of LILCO and served a total of 69 years as a firefighter.
A dedicated firefighter, Frank became a member of the department's Fire Police Squad when he could no longer perform the rigorous duties of a firefighter. Day and night Frank was on the scene of fires and car crashes, keeping onlookers at a safe distance and steering traffic away from firefighters working in the street.
Frank's three sons also serve as officers and firefighters; Bob in Hicksville, Ken in Syosset and Ronnie in Bethpage. Predeceased by his wife, Alice, Frank is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The flags at all three Levittown Fire Stations are at half-mast in honor of his service to the community and country. As his funeral procession passed by his station, #3 under the raised flag arch of two ladder trucks, the Levittown fire dispatchers alerted all members' radios that honorary chief and charter member Frank L. Johnson answered his final alarm.
