Tom Kohler of "A Step Ahead" approaches the Ocean to Sound Relay finish line.

Congratulations to the team of amputee athletes from the Hicksville-based "A Step Ahead," that took first place honors in the Physically Challenged Division of the Sept. 9 Ocean to Sound Relay hosted by the Greater Long Island Running Club.

The "A Step Ahead" athletes, coached by leading physical therapist Phil Kreuter, crossed the finish line in 6:19:29, placing them 20th overall in a field of 87 teams, almost all of them consisting of fully able bodied athletes.

"We are always thrilled to have the amputee team at the relay," observed GLIRC Relay Director Alan End. "A Step Ahead" and its athletes prove time and time again that being an amputee is more of a challenge than it is a handicap, and that amputee athletes-and amputees generally-can do virtually anything that they have the determination to undertake. Our congratulations to Coach Kreuter and his team."
