Stanley James Woodcheke Jr. (Woody), 78, died on Aug. 15, 2007 at his residence in Hudson, FL. He was a former longtime resident of Hicksville. He led an active life of service to his community as a member of the Masons, as a vestryman in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hicksville, as Cubmaster of Troop 508 and as Scoutmaster of Hicksville Troop 172. His career as an electrical engineer encompassed employment with American Bosch ARMA and Grumman. He retired from Grumman and moved to Hudson in 1992.
Upon settling in Hudson, he became an active member of St. Martin's Church, serving as junior warden and an acolyte. He was active in the homeowners association of his new development, got involved briefly in scouting in the area and joined the Elks Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lydia; and seven of his eight children; five sons, Michael and wife Denise of Sacramento, CA, Stephen of Seaford, Christopher of Westbury, Robert and wife Carolyn of Wantagh, Peter and wife Sunita of Simi Valley, CA; and two daughters, Constance Post, of Holtsville, NY, and Katherine and husband Johnny Biggens, of Tampa; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Arrangements were made by Dobies Funeral Home in Hudson. Religious service at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 Jerusalem Ave., Hicksville, on Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. Interment to follow at St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens. Ellen Dolan Chertiza, a former long-time resident of Hicksville and Port St. Lucie, Florida, died in Tucson, AZ on Aug. 29, 2007 from pneumonia and complications from recent illnesses. Born in 1923 to Joseph Gilbert and Helen Woulfe, Ellen grew up in the Irish neighborhoods of Manhattan's Upper Eastside. During WWII, she married Daniel Dolan and worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance and other jobs while Danny served in the South Pacific. Following WWII, Ellen and Danny lived the suburban dream buying a house in Hicksville and raising four children; Michael, James, Maureen, and Denise, while Danny worked construction as a steamfitter and Ellen worked in the Nassau County Treasurer's Office. Ellen was an active member of St. Ignatius Loyola parish and enjoyed many good times with family and friends at the Knights of Columbus and with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. After Daniel Dolan's death in 1972, Ellen later married Charles Chertiza of Hicksville and lived in retirement for many years in the Spanish Lakes community in Port St. Lucie, FL where she stayed active with the "Galloping Grannies" touring Florida to put on singing, dancing and theatrical productions at senior citizen centers and other venues. When Charles Chertiza died, Ellen served as a dedicated hospice volunteer. She moved to Arizona to be close to her daughter Denise and remained active with her new friends.
Ellen is survived by her sons, Michael Dolan of Greenwich, CT, and James Dolan of Coram, NY; her daughter Denise Dolan Spartonos of Tucson, AZ; seven loving grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends that came to know her and love her. Her daughter Maureen Dolan Schmitt preceded her in death.
Following cremation in Arizona, a Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Sept. 8 at the Calvary Cemetery Chapel, 49-02 Laurel Hill Blvd., Woodside, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ellen's name to your local hospice organization.
