Runners from all over Long Island and beyond are invited to join in the fun at the inaugural "Sprint for the Sands Point Preserve" on Saturday morning, Aug. 25. This 5 kilometer running race offers a unique combination of paved paths and runner friendly trails (and a surprise or two!) through the woodlands and Long Island Sound vistas of Nassau County's Sands Point Preserve at the north end of the Port Washington peninsula.
The 209-acre Sands Point Preserve, operated by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, is an unparalleled mixture of natural and landscaped areas. Forests, meadows, beach and cliffs, gardens and freshwater pond provide habitats for a variety of plants and animals. The proximity of different habitats provided Nassau local runners to experience the entire preserve in all its variegated aspects.
Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers overall, plus three deep in every five-year age group through 85 and over, as well as to the top three male and female Clydesdales in each of two weight divisions. Special commemorative summer shirts will go to every entrant.
All proceeds will benefit the restoration of buildings and woodlands at the Sands Point Preserve.
For entry forms or more information, contact Linda or Mike at the Greater Long Island Running Club at 349-7646. Online registration is available at 349-7646. If you want to enjoy the Preserve as a volunteer that morning rather than running the event, contact Mindy Davidson at 520-9481 or mindyruns@aol.com.
