The Hicksville Community Council will meet on Thursday, Feb. 1 at the William P. Bennett Community Center, which is located at 28 West Carl Street.
A change of pace meeting is planned for this month. Hicksville Historian Dick Evers and Hicksville Public Library Reference Librarian James Janis will present an interesting, historical and, at times, amusing narration featuring the burial grounds at Plain Lawn Cemetery on Old Country Road.
Many of Hicksville's original residents are buried at Plain Lawn. James has photographed gravesites and tombstones while Dick has provided historical background on the families that helped build Hicksville. They have worked very hard on this project with the support of the library.
Originally presented at a historical society meeting last year, the council has chosen to provide a repeat performance for those that may have missed this informative and educational presentation. Our history affects all of us so you should make every effort to attend.
The community council meetings welcome representatives from civic associations and other organizations in Hicksville to offer information on their groups and/or upcoming meetings. During this meeting, an update on the illegal housing issue will be presented by committee Chairman Mark Thomas.
It's time to renew your membership! Just a reminder that yearly dues are $10 for individuals or families; $5 for students and seniors; and $20 for organizations. Memberships are effective annually from January to December. Cash or check will be accepted.
The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments are provided by Hazel and John Ptacek. This will be an ideal way to spend a dreary February evening, so come on down and bring along a friend or neighbor. Be interested, become involved and be aware!
