I have been a resident of Hicksville for almost 30 years and always have been proud to call this my home, but not today. Hicksville had an election for a new fire commissioner - an extremely important position - and only 1,800 residents voted. How can this happen?
I know that there were numerous letters written to the Hicksville Illustrated News in support of one candidate or the other. I also know that there were gross distortions and misrepresentations made regarding eminent domain and the possibility of residents having their homes taken away from them. Nevertheless, here was an opportunity for everyone in the community to show their support for the brave people in our fire department and only 1,800 residents availed themselves of the opportunity.
Maybe if people had a chance to hear from the candidates directly, such as in a debate at the library sponsored by the Hicksville Community Council, many of the facts regarding the candidates would not be distorted. Then again, maybe I need to get more involved in the Hicksville community and get my information first-hand.
