I find it both hurtful and insulting that the Hicksville School District decided not to honor the veterans of Hicksville and the country by keeping their schools open and not celebrating Veterans Day.

In this day and age when our country is at war and our men and women are losing their lives every day, I find it to be very disrespectful to the veterans of this country. Whenever a holiday falls on a Saturday it is the usual practice to celebrate it on a Friday. For whatever reason, the Hicksville School District thought this holiday - a holiday they have always celebrated in past years - was unimportant to celebrate.

As a veteran myself, I feel it is a slap in the face of every man and woman who has served this great country. I would hope that the citizens and vets of Hicksville not let this happen again. We must never forget our veterans

Mike Flanagan

Veteran, United States Army
