"I am pleased to inform you that "Timothy's Law," which provides parity in insurance coverage for mental illnesses, has recently been approved by the State Senate. The legislation requires insurance companies to cover most mental illnesses and would require coverage for a broad range of mental illnesses and conditions specifically related to children.
"Timothy's Law is named after Timothy O'Clair, a 12-year-old boy from upstate New York who took his own life in 2001 after repeated bouts of depression. This important measure will provide those affected with mental illness with access to the treatment they need to get better.
"The legislation, which is also expected to be approved by the State Assembly, has built-in safeguards to protect small businesses and their employees. I commend all the mental health advocates and other caring New Yorkers who worked so hard to secure this agreement."
