The Hicksville Football Association's (HFA) 9-year-old and 12-year-old competition cheerleading teams rocked the house last weekend. Both teams were recognized in two different competitions, quite an accomplishment considering the fact that it is only the second year of competition for the 12-year-olds and the first year for the 9's.
On Saturday night, Nov. 5, the 12-year-olds brought their "A" game and filled the Plainedge gymnasium with tons of Hicksville spirit. The team performed a well-executed, dynamic routine that impressed not only the judges, but the standing room only crowd too. From on point toe touches, killer moves and daring stunts, they were completely in sync, smiling enthusiastically through their cheer. These girls did it all! For all their practice and hard work, the team was rewarded by the judges with the Spirit Award. There were 22 teams competing that night and this award is given to only one team in the entire competition. Coaches Dana Ferrara and Danielle Sansota did a wonderful job and were very proud of the team!
On Sunday afternoon, Nov. 6, the 9-year-old team (or as we like to call them "The Little Team That Could") took to the floor of the Lindenhurst gym with nothing to lose and all the confidence in the world. They competed against seven other teams with much more experience. Undaunted, the girls dazzled the judges with their bright smiles, spirited dance and amazing stunts. These girls were underdogs going in but they proved themselves with a third place win in the dance division! Coaches Tara and Kristen did a great job and were also very proud of the girls!
These successes could not have happened without a lot of help! First and foremost, let's give it up for the girls themselves for a job well done! Secondly, the coaches, Dana Ferrara, Danielle Sansotta, Tara Maccio and Kristen Stange. These volunteers put their whole heart and soul into their respective teams. Thanks to the parents who have been so supportive and for giving such great audience participation. Special thanks to Tonia Torrellas and Gina Ferrara for their unending support and advice. Take a bow, Kathi Calvanese and Debbie Burns. These two women were not only Team Mothers for the 12-year-olds, but the coordinators of the Competition Program, which took tons of administrative work to make this a reality. A nod to Team Mothers Dawn Walters and Regina Brennan for keeping things on track, especially when it seemed we were going off the rails. Pat yourselves on the back, you have all made HFA proud!
