First, and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go to all the people and their families impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
Over the past few days, New York consumers have seen gas prices jump an additional 25 to 50 cents per gallon at the pumps. In many instances the price change is not influenced by the receipt of a new shipment of gasoline. This now forces our fellow residents to pay an additional $12 to $20 to fill their vehicles' gas tanks.
Businesses all over our state that consume gasoline to meet the needs of their customers are starting to feel the pressure of the additional costs, and they need our help. They cannot continue to pay the increasing oil and gas prices. Product costs and services are going to be affected and, again, the consumer will bear the additional costs. Enough is enough!
Today, I am calling on my fellow state legislators to suspend the state's portion of the gas tax immediately. We must provide some relief to the consumer and ensure that our business economy and tourist industry remain strong.
The effects of the devastating storm must not be used to add millions and millions to the coffers of giant corporations while picking the pockets of New York State residents. This drastic and sudden change in price must be investigated by the attorney general, and those found guilty of any wrongdoing must be prosecuted. I urge the New York State attorney general to scrutinize the actions of the oil companies.
In addition, I have requested the same tax relief of the federal government through repeal of the federal government's portion of the gas tax.
It is time to do the right thing by our residents. I am going to forward a copy of this letter to the appropriate state and federal representatives, and I urge all of you to contact your local state senator and congressman, and urge them to suspend their respective gasoline taxes.
