HFD Public Referendum Passes
During a special public referendum held on Aug. 15, residents of the Hicksville Fire District voted 162 to 5 in favor of bringing the district's Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP) into compliance with the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967.

Louis - Red - Mertz Passes Away
Nicknamed Red because of his hair color, Mr. Metz first entered the fire service in 1945, at the age of 19, as a member of the Manhasset Lakeville Fire Department. Twelve years later, in 1957, he moved to Hicksville and joined the Hicksville Fire Department's Company #1. A year later, Mr. Mertz transferred to Company #2 and rose through the ranks, serving in various capacities, including captain of the department, chairman of the tournament committee and president of the exempt association as well as captain of the department's racing team for three years.

Hicksville Ice Hockey Club Tryouts
The Hicksville Ice Hockey Club will be conducting tryouts at their only pre-season skate on Saturday Aug. 27 from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. at Newbridge Arena. All players in grades 6-12 are encouraged to attend. The team intends to field a varsity team (grades 9-12) and possibly a middle school team (grades 6-8). The cost is $20 per player.
