Cantiague Figure Skating Club Holds Seminar
The Cantiague Figure Skating Club held a figure skating seminar with Olympic and World Coach Tatiana on Aug. 1 at Cantiague Park Ice Rink in Hicksville. Tarasova has taught many world and Olympic freestyle and ice dance athletes over the past 35 years with her most recent achievement being Alexi Yagudin, the Russian men's figure skating champion's Olympic Gold Medalist at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games. She is currently training Michelle Kwan in California.
Firefighters Museum and Education Center Receives $1.3 Million County Grant
The Francis X. Pendl Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center announced the receipt of a grant of $1.3 million from Nassau County. The funds will be applied to initial construction costs of a 4,500-square-foot museum in a former aircraft hanger on the grounds of Museum Row in Uniondale. The space will include educational and historic displays of vintage and current firefighting apparatus and equipment, as well as a state-of -the-art fire safety education center, designed to teach Nassau residents of all ages how to prevent fires and fire-related injuries and deaths. The funding was approved by two committees and the floor of the entire county legislature without opposition during their sessions on July 25.
Cantiague Park Senior Men's Golf League
It was another very hot and humid day today. The scores were not bad today. We had eight men shoot under par and two others shot an even par (with handicaps). We had 41 pars among the 39 golfers. Jim Green got four and John Pellegrino got five pars. We also had two birdies, one by Pete Guerra and the other by Joe Biello, both were on the 150-yard, par 3, third hole. We played the third round of our match play tournament. The survivors are Jim Greene, Jim Anderson, Pete Guerra and the winner of the match between John Wengler and Lou Neumann (They will play their match sometime before the next tournament).
Hicksville Ice Hockey Club Tryouts
The Hicksville Ice Hockey Club will be conducting tryouts at their only pre-season skate on Saturday Aug. 27 from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. at Newbridge Arena. All players in grades 6-12 are encouraged to attend. The team intends to field a varsity team (grades 9-12) and possibly a middle school team (grades 6-8). The cost is $20 per player.
