St. Paul the Apostle Church of Brookville's CenterStage will present The Prince and the Pauper at Mercy First School in Syosset Aug. 4 through Aug. 7. This year's performance includes onstage and behind-the-scenes contributions from many Long Islanders of all ages, backgrounds and denominations including from Hicksville, the Blacks, Ron Castillo, brother/sister duo Daniel and Deana Kani, Adam Mosebach and Andrew Villaran.
Jim and Cathy Black, along with their two children, are prominently involved in all aspects of the musical. Mr. Black is the producer and Mrs. Black is the business manager and has a role in the production. Their son, Christopher, is the Prince, and their daughter, Alix, is Nan. Mr. Black has been with St. Paul the Apostle CenterStage since 1981 and has produced and acted over the years. Mr. Black is a vice president and corporate lawyer for Commuter Associates and Mrs. Black teaches at C.W. Post College. Their children attend Our Lady of Mercy School in Hicksville.
Ron Castillo is the director and plays the role of King Henry. Castillo has been involved in numerous CenterStage performances. He is both the director of theater technology and high school orchestral co-director at Valley Stream Central High School. He also teaches strings and piano, and is a composer of musicals and movie soundtracks.
Brother and sister team Daniel and Deana Kani are once again participating in a CenterStage production. Daniel, a teacher at Plainedge High School, is the production manager and has the role Sergeant at Arms while Deana, a recent graduate of Hicksville High School, is assistant stage manager. Both Daniel and Deana are members of the United Methodist Church. During her senior year, Deana traveled with a group to Africa under the sponsorship of the New York District of the Methodist Church to build a church. She plans to major in construction technology in the fall.
Adam Mosebach is appearing as Miles. For the past three years Mosebach has been living in Manhattan while studying at CAP21 Studio at NYU/Tisch School. He will enter his senior year at NYU in the fall to complete studies for his BFA in musical theatre. For CenterStage, Mosebach has appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar, Children of Eden, Big River and Oliver. He began theater work for Playhouse 107 in Hicksville when he was 10 years old, starring in the title role of Oliver. He has performed in more than 70 productions with the Spotlight Players, Hicksville Repertory Company and CenterStage at St. Pauls, as well as others.
Appearing as Pike is Andrew Villaran. A junior majoring in music education at C.W. Post College, Villaran is a multi-talented young man who has experience in music, violin, singing and theater. After spending his freshman year at SUNY Fredonia, Villaran transferred to Post where his is studying violin and voice. He is proficient in piano and bass guitar as well as the didgeridoo, which is played by Aborigines of Australia. For CenterStage, Villaran was in the 2004 production of Oliver. During his high school career, Villaran appeared in such productions as Mame, You Can't Take it With You, Me and My Girl, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Guys and Dolls, Don't Drink the Water and The Boyfriend.
The Prince and the Pauper is CenterStage's 28th production. Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for seniors, children under 12 and groups of 10 or more. Performances are Thursday, Aug. 4, Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information, call 822-7299.
