Hicksville resident James Delaney succumbed to his injures on Thursday, July 21 after being hit by a car the night before. James, who would have turned 15 on July 23, was riding his bike home from football practice when the accident happened at 8:32 p.m. at the intersection of Newbridge Road and Elmira Road.

According to Homicide Squad detectives, James Lombardo, 35, of Levittown, was operating a 2001 Lexus and traveling southbound on Newbridge Road when he drove through a green traffic signal at the intersection of Elmira Road and collided with James, who was traveling east to west across Newbridge Road on his bicycle.

James was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was listed in extremely critical condition. He died at 7:15 a.m. the next day.

James, who would have been entering his sophomore year at Hicksville's Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in September, was a member of the school's wrestling team. The school's website posted the following announcement: "The entire Holy Trinity community mourns the loss of James Delaney whose life was tragically taken in an auto accident on Wednesday evening, July 20. Our thoughts and prayers are with James, his family and his friends during this difficult time."

The Lexus was impounded from the accident scene for safety tests. Detectives reported that there are no charges and no apparent criminal activity at this time.

James is survived by his parents, James and Susan, and sisters, Allison and Kelly. The family was cared for by the Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home, Hicksville. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hicksville with Interment at Pine Lawn.
