On Saturday, June 25, the Hicksville Public Library's Board of Trustees will honor longtime Hicksville resident Richard "Dick" E. Evers by re-naming the library's local history room the Richard E. Evers Local History Room.
Evers, a lifelong resident of Hicksville, became the library's historian in 1988 under the directorship of the late Kenneth Barnes. In 1976, Mr. Barnes began to accumulate a small collection of donated artifacts and newspaper articles and at the same time, interviewed many older Hicksville residents about the lives in the community. After he spoke with Evers about his large personal collection, Mr. Barnes encouraged his library board to create an ongoing local history program with Evers at the helm.
And the rest, as they say, is history. Local history as the case may be.
Evers is a former junior high school social studies teacher and member of many Hicksville community organizations. He has received honors and awards from Hicksville Schools, the Hicksville Community Council, the Gregory Museum, the Kiwanis Club, the Knights of Columbus and, of course, the Hicksville Historical Society.
In honoring Evers and the re-naming of the local history room, the Hicksville Public Library's Board of Trustees will host a small reception at the library from 3 to 5 p.m. on June 25. The public is invited to attend as this honor is bestowed on Hicksville's own Dick Evers.
