A Parent's Plea: Bone Marrow Transplant Necessary
Hicksville resident Salvatore "Tory" Zabatino was first diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in March 2002 - just six months before his 21st birthday. A Marist College sophomore at the time, Zabatino immediately underwent blood transfusions and was admitted to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset where he underwent aggressive chemo and radiation therapy. During this time, Zabatino, who graduated from Hicksville High School in 1999, also endured numerous spinal taps and bone marrow extractions.
Hicksville's Xtreme - Metrostars Champions Again!
The Hicksville American Soccer Club Boys U10 Xtreme Team finished on top for a second consecutive year in the tri-state Soccer Coliseum Metrostars Coliseum Cup Tournament, held on April 16 at Giants Stadium. Along the way to the finals the Xtreme beat teams from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Adding to the excitement, the champions would get to walk on the field at halftime of the nationally televised professional match to receive acknowledgement.
AED Program Implemented by Hicksville PAL
Over the last eight months, the Nassau County PAL has been working with John and Karen Acompora - along with their organization, the Louis J. Acompora Foundation, to bring forward a program designed to protect the lives of the children it serves. "An AED on Every Field" is an initiative designed to place Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at every field or gym where its children are engaged in sporting activities.
OLM's Meghan Kiley Receives Outstanding HS Achievement Award
At the Nassau County Sports Commission's (NCSC) Annual Awards Dinner, which was held on April 11, athlete Meghan Kiley of Our Lady of Mercy Academy was honored with the Outstanding High School Achievement Award. The dinner, held at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place, honors athletes and coaches for excellence in sports, academics, sportsmanship and community service. These awards were given out on the high school, collegiate and professional levels.
