NBC Universal Chairman and CEO Bob Wright and his wife, Suzanne, will get up-close-and-personal in the April/May issue of the Hicksville-based specialty lifestyle autism magazine, Spectrum. Their story will shed much needed light on the number one growing developmental disability in the country, autism, which is now affecting one in every 166 children every day in the United States.
On the heels of NBC's weeklong special news series, "Autism: The Hidden Epidemic," which aired in February, the Wrights will publicly share their personal connection to the disorder with Spectrum and its readers. The feature article captures the Wrights' telling tale with autism as they recall first receiving the devastating news that their then 2-year-old grandson, Christian, was diagnosed with autism. They also reveal the inspiring story of how they converted their sadness and frustrations into something positive for other families - establishing their own non-profit organization, Autism Speaks, as a vital resource for parents seeking information about the disorder and a terminal for other organizations that specialize in research, networking, early intervention and awareness.
In light of their grandson's late diagnosis, the Wrights are turning to Spectrum as an informational portal to promote the importance of early diagnosis and intervention and touch on the controversial theories regarding the possible link between inoculations and autism. They also talk about the need for autism awareness and understanding, as well as the sudden burst of autism in the media, which ignited after NBC's special autism series hit the airwaves on NBC and its family stations MSNBC, CNBC and Telemundo.
"We appreciate Bob and Suzanne choosing Spectrum as a vehicle to share their compelling story," said Spectrum Publisher Evelyn Ain. "I know that our readers will be inspired by their experience with autism and grateful for all they have done to build awareness and generate more understanding."
