After finishing the season in third place in their league, with an 8-4 record, and just barely making the playoffs, the sixth grade girls of Holy Family had an outstanding run in the playoffs, winning all their games, to take home the CYO "B" championship of Nassau-Suffolk.

When the playoff brackets came out, Holy Family was faced with the daunting task that for them to advance each time they would have to beat a tough opponent at that team's home site. Each game they played, these girls stepped up to the competition and each time they prevailed. truly outstanding effort was shown by all the girls on the team.

The first round of the playoffs, played on Jan. 25, Holy Family traveled to Island Park to take on Sacred Heart, a team that finished 10-2 during the season. After a very tough game and a fine defensive battle by both teams, Holy Family came out on top with an 18-16 victory.

On Jan. 29, Holy Family was faced against undefeated and defending "C" champion, Infant Jesus of Mt. Sinai. By not letting a definite height disadvantage get in their way. The Holy Family girls controlled the game and went on to win 29-25. Well worth the long ride to Mt. Sinai

That victory brought on St. Hyacinth's of Glen Head, a game that was played the following night. St. Hyacinth, with an 11-1 record, already beat Holy Family earlier in the season and finished first place in that league. Playing in their third away game in six days didn't seem to bother Holy Family too much. They came out ready to play and that they did. Holy Family led most of the game but St. Hyacinth kept it close. With a game that went into overtime, Holy Family held on to win 26-25.

In the final game, played a week later, Holy Family met up with St. Christopher's of Baldwin (11-1) at St. Bernard's in Levittown. Holy Family was able to take the lead early on and hold on to it. With an outstanding defensive effort, the girls went on to a 20-14 victory and the "B" championship.

Coaches Tom Orlando and Al Abbriano would like to congratulate all their players: Marissa Mertens, Meghan Orlando, Chelsea Bauer, Korey Abbriano, Michelle Filangeri, Allison McNamara and Brigid Angellini for their hard work and a really great season. They would also like to thank Bob for keeping the books, the parents for all of their support and Holy Family CYO for running such a great program.
