Island Harvest, Long Island's Source Authority on Food Rescue, is once again getting help in its fight to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island from its friends at Hofstra University. Fans attending the double header basketball game on Wednesday, Nov. 24, are invited to bring donations of non-perishable canned or packaged foods to help feed our neighbors this holiday season. Donors will receive a free team poster of the Hofstra men's and women's basketball teams. Food collection bins will be located at the entrances of the Hofstra University Arena.
The Hofstra women's basketball team will kick-off the double header at 5 p.m. against Colgate followed by the men's basketball team taking on LaSalle at 7:30 p.m. For game information contact Hofstra University at 463-6633, ext. 1. For more information about Island Harvest visit www.islandharvest.org or call 294-8528.
Hofstra's food drive is being held in conjunction with Island Harvest's Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign, ongoing through Dec. 31. Several local businesses including Waldbaum's, Panera Bread, Barnstable Broadcasting, Inc. (KJOY, WHLI, B-103 and Island 94.3), Harrison Leifer DiMarco and Herald Community Newspapers have joined the campaign in order to help provide Long Islanders in need with warm, nutritious meals this holiday season.
Long Islanders are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items at any of the several drop-off locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties for the duration of the campaign. Waldbaum's stores across Long Island will offer its customers the opportunity to buy the trimmings for a typical holiday dinner for a needy family. Customers can have a $7 bar-coded coupon from in-store displays scanned at the checkout, which will provide all the trimmings such as cranberry sauce, stuffing and canned vegetables. And, for a limited time, Waldbaum's will match the contribution by donating a turkey to make the holiday meal complete (up to the first 1,000 donation coupons purchased).
