Who is the Briggs Street Committee? There are some residents who have lived on Briggs Street for more than 40 years and have neither been invited to a meeting by this organization nor has anyone from this group ever knocked on any of our doors.
So we decided to do some research to find out who they actually are. Our impression is that they are a small handful of residents living near the fire station on the corner of Briggs Street and Woodbury Road. Their quotes in the media range from "What the Hicksville Fire Departments wants can be built in another more suitable location," (Gary Tietjen, Hicksville Illustrated News - July 4, 2003.) to "It is my recommendation that the Hicksville Fire Department build a 'state-of-the-art' firehouse somewhere else" (Rosemarie Ehrich, Hicksville Illustrated News - June 6, 2003) and "They deserve a bigger firehouse. Not in this spot" (Adam Kounas, Newsday - Aug. 6, 2003).
As concerned residents of Hicksville, we don't want the firehouse moved. In fact, we hope the fire district moves forward with its plans to renovate it, modernize it so our firefighters have a safe environment to continue to protect the homes of our families, friends and citizens of Hicksville.
Based on what we have learned, we would like to request of that committee to change the name of their group to accurately reflect their membership. This is only fair to the remaining residents of Briggs Street who are in favor of the renovation of Hicksville Fire Station No. 2.
