Hicksville High School students got an unexpected day off Wednesday after a tree, which uprooted during the previous night's heavy rainfall, knocked out power lines and left the building in the dark. The tree was located on Halsey Avenue, the first side street just north of the high school.

According to Michael Lowndes, media spokesperson for LIPA, the entire tree was uprooted, but neither the school nor any adjacent homes were damaged. Electricity was turned back on by 11 a.m. Sept. 29, and students returned to classes on Thursday. There were no injuries.
