Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon would like to warn senior citizens about the latest telemarketing scam targeting seniors.

"My office has received reports that two senior citizens in Nassau County received suspicious calls this year that appear to have been attempts to commit telemarketing fraud," said Dillon.

Dillon continued, "During one telephone call, the caller indicated that she was from the Department of Senior Citizen Affairs and was calling to assist the senior citizen with her IRA savings. During a series of telephone calls to a different senior citizen, the caller indicated that she was calling from a company called 'Medical Alert', and that the 'Senior Citizens of Nassau County' were giving away free medical alert devices."

The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs has reported that it was not administering programs of this nature at the time that these calls were made. Because the callers represented themselves to be agents of the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, the District Attorney's Special Investigations Bureau has opened an investigation.

Dillon urges any senior citizen who has received suspicious telephone calls similar to these to contact the Special Investigations Bureau of the Nassau County District Attorney's Office at 571-2100 and ask for Assistant District Attorney Christine Sullivan.

"If you should receive a call of this nature, please ask the caller for his or her name, contact phone number, and the organization from which he or she is calling," Dillon said. "It is equally important that you do not give out any personal information, including date of birth, social security and any bank account information. It is important that you terminate the conversation if you are made to feel uncomfortable or suspicious and please do not hesitate to report suspicious calls to our office."
