Golfer Don Williams was laughing out loud as he took another drop near the water on the ninth hole at Oyster Bay Course in Syosset. However, while Williams took a beating on his scorecard, his participation in such an event is what really mattered.

On a sun-drenched April afternoon, nearly 80 players and organizers came together to launch Hicksville Football Association's (HFA) First Annual Golf Outing. While the success of youth leagues generally depend on community involvement, the turnout was a prominent display of support from Hicksville residents who have become increasingly embroiled with the program. The outing comes at a good time for a league that is beginning to find its stride among other sports programs in town.

"The outings are important not only from a revenue standpoint but to give exposure and information about the league to everyone," said HFA Treasurer Mike Torrellas.

Electrician John Carroll added, "Hey, it's a great day for some golf and if we can help the kids at the same time what can be better than that?"

With only seven weeks to prepare, league officials were wary of being able to make the event happen at all. "Some of the golfers, many on short notice, showed how much they are willing to help. We can't thank them enough" said HFA Board Member Rob Morrissey.

Meanwhile, as many golfers were replacing their divots on the challenging course, some were actually playing some good golf. Low scores for the day were shared by Kevin Shinnick and Kevin Farrell, both shooting a respectable 81.

Post-golf festivities were held at Crossroads Restaurant in Hicksville, where golfers were able to unwind with some great food and drink.

The talents of Steve Culhane have yet to be revealed, but it certainly isn't as a public speaker. Crossroads owner, Paul Desimone, grabbed the microphone away from Culhane just in time before the crowd fell into a coma, showing his future as Master of Ceremonies for next year's outing. Many laughs were had as numerous prizes were raffled off, including an authentic autographed Heisman football, generously donated by Rob Whalen.

The Crusaders would like to thank those who sponsored a hole as well as Crossroads, Rob Walker, Outback Steakhouse and especially those who participated in the event.

Anyone interested in getting involved with the league as a sponsor, coach, player, cheerleader, helper, or just to be a fan, call Mike Torrellas at 822-1289. The next registration date for players and cheerleaders is Wednesday, May 12 between 5:30 and 8 p.m. at Levittown Hall.
