On Saturday April 17, the Hicksville American Soccer Club Boys U9 developmental squad the "Extreme" finished what they had started in March by winning the championship game of the Metrostars Coliseum Cup Tournament, 2-0. This tournament, which draws teams from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, played its final championship match at Giants Stadium, before the Metrostars home opener.

Like the Metrostars game that followed, the Hicksville game was fast-paced and exciting. The Hicksville opponents in the championship were the Falcons, a hand-picked super-star team formed from an alliance of three Northern Jersey soccer clubs. The Falcons were coming into the championship match as the favorites due to their undefeated and unscored upon record. To further increase their chances, the Falcons showed up that day with two "guest" players who are currently "playing up" on U10 travel teams. Even this help could not stop the Hicksville boys from claiming what they desired, the championship cup.

The two teams matched up well, with the edge in speed going to Hicksville, and the edge in physical play going to the Falcons. Mistakes would end up deciding the game with the "Extreme" capitalizing on two opportunities given them by the Falcons. The first Hicksville goal was scored off a rebound from a hard outside shot that was not collected by the Falcon goalie. The second goal was scored because of poor communication between two Falcon defenders and their goalie. Sensing the indecision on the Falcons, the lone Hicksville boy in the area was able to obtain the ball, beat all three Falcons, and put it in the back of the net.

Down 2-0, the Falcons never gave up and kept the pressure on right up to the final minute of play. Throughout the entire match, the Hicksville boys never stopped battling, and their true determination and desire is what the coaches and parents feel finally made the difference. Hicksville simply would not be denied, the boys did whatever was necessary to achieve their desires.

Each and every player contributed to the success, and each enjoyed the awards ceremony that was held on the field just before the start of the professional game. The boys, on the field for the national anthem, missed hearing their names announced because of the 40,000 screaming fans, but got to see themselves on the Jumbo-Tron. To add to their special day, the boys were on hand to see DC United 14-years old phenomenon Freddy Adu attempt to spoil the Metrostars homecoming. During the ensuing professional play the boys got to see history made as Freddy scored his first professional goal. But Freddy's goal was to no avail as the Metrostars ended up winning 3-2.

Capping the day for the "Extreme," the story of the team's success that day was picked up by News 12 Long Island, who acknowledged the boys accomplishments on air, immediately after their report on the professional game. The parents and coaches just hope that the players continue their hard work and devotion to the sport, and each other, and that it won't be too long before they are back in the hunt for similar future opportunities.
