On Saturday, March 13, the Special Olympics of New York held its 6th Annual Polar Plunge, a major fund-raising event at Camp Mariah (Sharpe Reservation) in Fishkill, NY. The event was a record-setter, with approximately $19,000 generated for SONY, which proceeds cost-free sports opportunities to children and adults with mental retardation. The previous high amount raised was $15,000. Sixty-six people raised at least $100 each to earn the privilege of jumping into the 34 degree waters at Camp Mariah.
The Polar Plunge is a Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) fund-raising event actively supported by the New York State Fraternal Order of Police (NYSFOP). LETR, the largest grassroots fund-raiser and awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world, is run by volunteer law enforcement officials.
