Marianne Litzman, assistant superintendent for secondary instruction in Hicksville, is the 2004 Founder's Day honoree.

The Hicksville School District's PTA Founder's Day will take place on Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Milleridge Inn, beginning at 6 p.m. This year's honoree is Marianne Litzman, Hicksville's assistant superintendent for secondary instruction.

September will mark Litzman's 20th anniversary of service to Hicksville students, schools and the community. During the past two decades, she has worked in several different capacities and at several of the district's schools. Litzman started in 1984 as a ninth grade science teacher and worked her way up the ranks as a dedicated professional who also served as science coordinator, director of continuing education, principal of the evening school, assistant principal of the middle school and principal of Dutch Lane before serving in her current position as assistant superintendent for secondary instruction.

Over the years, Litzman has also filled her "free" time with work on countless committees, some of which include the PTA, SEPTA, Academic Intervention Services, the Professional Development Plan, The Health and Safety Council, the Board of Education Police Committee and the district's Reading Committee.

Litzman has found comfort in personal rewards during her career, but the real reward for her is the impact she has made on the lives of students. "It's extraordinary to reap the awards of making a lasting impact on students," she said. "Nothing compares to the former student who remembers to send a note when they open their first medical practice or the student who writes out of the blue to say thanks."

Litzman took great pride in being involved in the planning of Dutch Lane's 50th Anniversary. The involvement of the school's neighbors and the knowledge and pictures they shared provided Litzman and the students with a renowned appreciation for the school and the role it has played in the community.

She often chuckles when she thinks of the little things along the way that brightened her days. While principal at Dutch Lane, Litzman was promoted by a kindergartner who addressed her as Mrs. President.

Litzman's success as a student undoubtedly prepared her for the challenge facing today's educators. She attended Northeastern University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's of science degree. She received her master's degree from Hofstra University prior to earning a Professional Diploma in educational administration from Long Island University.

Litzman and her husband, Jay, have two children, Joshua and Alexandra. She and her family enjoy skiing and reading.
