Mike Wigdzinski, a senior at Hicksville High School, has been named to the Nassau County high school hockey all-star squad that will face off against Suffolk County in the 8th Annual Vytra Cup on Jan. 10 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale.
Sponsored by Vytra Heath Plans, the New York Islanders and Newsday, the Vytra Cup will benefit All Island Handicapped Sports, a non-profit organization that runs programs for physically challenged children, some of whom compete in the Special Olympics, and the New York Islanders Children's Foundation.
Wigdzinski plays defense on the Hicksville Stars team, currently coached by Butch Petersen. The Vytra Cup has become a premier scouting opportunity for area college programs, and this year's game takes on added significance as a talent showcase because two local colleges, Briarcliff College (Bethpage) and SUNY Farmingdale, will inaugurate hockey programs in the 2004-2005 season.
The Vytra Cup game will begin at 6 p.m. on Jan. 10. Tickets are $5 each and can be ordered by calling the High School Hockey League of Nassau County at 682-0594 or online at www.longislandhshockey.net, and clicking on Vytra Cup.
