Last year, when the Hicksville Crusaders Football and Cheerleading program was established, organizers were well aware that the league's success would squarely hinge on the town's response.

Well it's now official. In remarkable fashion, nearly 300 children were registered to participate this season, undoubtedly stamping a seal of approval for the program here in Hicksville. The organization's rapid expansion has made it one of the fastest growing leagues in Nassau County history.

"The support from people has been incredible," said Crusader's Treasurer Mike Torrellas, who expects the sign-up numbers to increase next year.

The league offers a good diversion for Hicksville kids during the fall months, as once barren playing fields now show visible signs of life as parents exchange high-fives when the orange and black play their games.

This year, the Crusaders were cast into the highly talented Nassau County Youth Football League (NCYFL), a decision that is now being applauded by many as it teaches kids to compete on a high level at a rapid pace. And while the Crusaders have not piled up a string of winning seasons just yet, their goals are not measured by wins and losses.

"We've already won just by competing and experiencing what football can teach these kids for everyday life" said Torrellas.

Each Sunday this season, the Crusaders were able to proclaim victory knowing Hicksville children were sharing in the full football and cheerleading experience. "Success can not be viewed solely on what the scoreboard shows, instead, there should be satisfaction based on participation," Torrellas said.

The league has become a body of work, looked upon as an investment in our children, teaching teamwork and discipline as it yields lasting relationships throughout their lives. The organization has created a new whirlwind of excitement in Hicksville that is sure to carry over into next season. Development of a new league can be a challenging endeavor on the best of circumstances and Crusader organizers are extremely grateful to the sponsors, coaches, parents, players and cheerleaders who made for a terrific season.
