Senior Housing Application Gets Mixed Reviews
Civic leaders and senior citizens gathered last Thursday at the Hicksville Public Library to learn about a proposal that, if approved, would grant Robert Behringer, president of Carriage Hill Associates, a change of zoning and the right to construct Cantiague Commons, a group of senior housing units at the current site of the Twin County Asphalt Plant. While many would like nothing more than to see affordable housing offered to the elder community, many who attended the Hicksville Community Council's meeting expressed concern that the proposed site is an inappropriate choice.

District Court Halts Enforcement of Nassau's Smoking Ban
Earlier this month, US District Court Judge Denis Hurley issued a preliminary injunction on Nassau County's three-month-old smoking ban, halting its enforcement to allow for additional review of the ordinance. Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, however, said the injunction does not overturn the law, which went into effect on March 1 of this year, and the ban is still in effect. State law will take effect July 24.

With the second season just around the corner, open registration for the Hicksville Football Association, including players and cheerleaders, will be held on Tuesday, June 24 and Friday, June 27 at Westy's Storage, 65 West John Street, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
