I would like to thank you for the article about coping with mental disorders, which appeared in the Hicksville Illustrated News (Coping: "A Picture Tells a Story for Families Coping With Mental Illness," April 25).
I was just recently informed that my cousin was diagnosed with schizophrenia and your article helped me cope with this problem. Although I took a health course at my high school, I never fully understood the disorder. After reading your article, however, I feel as though I am able to handle the situation.
When my mother first told me about my cousin, I didn't know how to react. Later that night, I went on the Internet to research the disorder. I found no information on the questions I had. I only found information on what the disorder was, but nothing on living with loved ones who had the disability. Finally, I came across the article in the Hicksville Illustrated and all my questions were answered. I realized that all I can do is continue to love my cousin and go on with my life. I know the next time I see my cousin she will be completely different. My cousin doesn't know anything is "wrong" with her therefore she will not suffer. I never knew how many people had this mental disorder.
Thank you so much for that article. It taught me so much and I am very appreciative. I truly believe that anyone who reads this article will be touched in a way they won't forget, especially those who are going through what I am going through.
