|
Sheila Hoegl Noeth, born July 12, 1912 in London, England, came to this country at the age of five with her mother, Edith, father, Samuel, and brother, Brian Diggle. The family lived in Dayton Ohio and Bayonne, NJ before settling in the Village of Hempstead where she grew up and went to school. Sheila married John Hoegl, an émigré from Rupolding, Germany. After the birth of her sons, John and Peter, she started the Beacon Newspapers in West Hempstead in 1951.
The newspaper grew through the years and now has five editions. After the passing of her first husband, Sheila married Fred Noeth of Hicksville and with Fred co-published four Town of Oyster Bay newspapers: Mid-Island Herald, Plainview Herald, Syosset Tribune and Jericho Tribune. (The Plainview Herald, Syosset Tribune and Jericho Tribune were later sold to Anton Community Newspapers.)
Sheila was involved in many local organizations: President of Nassau Press Association, President of East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, co-founder of the Hicksville Community Council, first female member of the West Hempstead Board of Education, to name a few. Sheila leaves two sons, John Hoegl of Ewing, NJ and Peter Hoegl of Eatons Neck, Long Island and four grandchildren, Andrew and Bradly Hoegl of Los Angeles, Heide Hart of Patchogue and Raina LaGlenne of Islandia.
