Holy Family needed a victory against St. Hugh's in order to clinch at least a tie for first place. The task was daunting as St. Hugh's not only had the league's second best record, but was also the league's tallest team.
In this David vs. Goliath confrontation, Holy Family utilized a tenacious full court press to disrupt St. Hugh's high-powered offense and raced to a 12-5 lead after one quarter. Valerie Ahrens, and Courtney Breen scored six points each during the first quarter.
Things looked bleak, however, when two of Holy Family's star performers, Courtney and Erin Breen, were forced to sit out the entire second quarter due to goal trouble. Super subs Katie Leo and Michelle Vicidomini capably filled the void as Holy Family carried an 18-13 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Breen sisters returned and scored 13 of Holy Family's 16 points, propelling Holy Family to a 34-23 lead heading into the final stretch of the game. In the fourth quarter, Courtney (17 points), Valerie (14 points) and Erin (12 points) continued their hot shooting with great defensive pressure by Nicole DeGennaro (three points), Nicole Robison and Katie Leo and great rebounding by Michelle Vicidomini (two points) and Jennifer Osorio prevented St. Hugh's from mounting a comeback.
This total team effort resulted in a 46-34 victory for Holy Family, bringing the season record to 10-1 and enabling them to clinch at least a tie for first place.
