First place winner Joe Aversano with his son Paul and his wife Sylvia. Paul is a graduate of Hicksville High School. They caught their fish in Cold Spring Harbor in their boat, the Sea-Cilian.

This year, 13 of the top 15 winners were from the Town of Oyster Bay's Bluefish Tournament, including first place winner Joe Aversano of Hicksville.

Joe and his son, Paul Aversano of Manhasset, were out the morning of the tournament at 6 a.m. and caught the winning 15.05 pound bluefish at 7 a.m. off Cooper's Bluff. Aversano's wife, Louise, who attends the tournament every year, said this is the first year her son has gone to the tournament.

"[Joe] has been in it for 17 years and never even won a bucket for those 17 years," said Louise Aversano. "That was why it was so exciting. [Paul] was away at college, then he lived in the city when he first got married. Then they bought a house in Manhasset and were finishing it. Now, he's been fishing with him this year. They love to fish. My son was fishing as soon as he could walk."

Aversano is one of the founders of the Oyster Bay Anglers Club, which has been in existence for about a dozen years. He is the Rear Admiral of the Sagamore Yacht Club.

Along with plaques, winners of this year's Bluefish Tournament received gift certificates in the following amounts: 1st place - $2,000 gift certificate; 2nd place - $1,000 gift certificate; 3rd place - $750 gift certificate; 4th place - $600 gift certificate; 5th and 6th places - $500 gift certificate; 7th and 8th places - $400 gift certificate; 9th and 10th places - $300 gift certificate; 11th and 12th places - $200 gift certificate; and 13th, 14th and 15th places - $100 gift certificate.

Thanks to the sponsors of this year's Bluefish Tournament, various raffle prizes were awarded. The sponsors included Arizona Ice Tea, Bridge Marina, Coca Cola, Cover Craft, Duffy's Bait and Tackle, Foresight Marine Center, Garans Bait and Tackle, Good Stuff Marketing Promotions, H&M Powles Marina, Kydd's Marine Center, Lowrance Electronics, Manhattan Beer Distributors, Mercury Mercruiser, Mill Max Corporation, Nathan's Famous, Nor'East Saltwater, North Shore Fire Equipment, Oyster Bay Beverage, Phillips Fish, Quicksilver Inflatable Boats, Sekora Lures, State Bank of Long Island, Steve's Pier I, Tents "R" "S", WBAB 102.3 FM and Wise Potato Chips.
