Residents of Hicksville this week had another opportunity to cast their vote on the district's proposed $38,960,000 bond referendum. On Wednesday, June 19, residents voted 1,066 to 946 in favor of Proposition 1 while defeating Proposition 2 1,060 to 1,186 votes.
The bond referendum was modified and separated into two propositions by the Hicksville Board of Education after residents defeated the first proposal of $41.8 million by 200 votes earlier this year. This time, Proposition 1 passed by 120 votes and Proposition 2 was defeated by 123 votes.
Passage of Proposition 1 allows the district to borrow a little less than $33.25 million for technology and facilities projects such as
energy efficient windows, electrical upgrades, plumbing, ceiling tiles, fire alarm and public address upgrades, roof drains and columns, ventilation, temperature controls, fascia, a new telephone system and boiler, roof and toilet replacements.
Proposition 1, with state aid, will cost $2.15 per $100 of assessed value or $10.75 a month for the first five years and $1.86 per $100 of assessed value or $9.31 a month for the remainder of the 15-year bond. The annual cost, with state aid, would be $129.01 per household for the first five years and $111.71 for the remainder of the bond. Figures are based on a home assessed at $6,000.
The second proposition, which could have only become effective if voters approved both Proposition 1 and Proposition 2, sought approval to borrow an additional $5.71 million for improvements to the building facilities and grounds.
Residents voted against the district's proposal for such athletic projects as district-wide reconstruction of the ballfields, improvement of drainage and maintenance with an irrigation system that preserves the field, new backstops as well as reconstructed tennis courts, a new press box/concession stand and new football field lighting. In addition, passage of Proposition 2 would have enabled the district to cover the costs of fence work, auditorium renovations, security upgrades and air conditioning installation.
