The gymnasium of Hicksville High School will come alive on Friday, March 1 for the district's annual Color Night. Established in 1992, Color Night is intended to raise money for the high school's Parent-Teacher-Student Scholarship Fund.
Students, teachers, parents and administrators will be divided into teams of orange and black to compete in various beat-the-clock games, including scooter races, a hockey shoot, basketball relays, volleyball matches and obstacle courses. "The night consists of a myriad of outlandish contests," Nancy Callari, board president, said.
The evening will begin with a student performance of the Star Spangled Banner. The Hicksville Varsity Cheerleaders will perform throughout the games and the high school's Starlet Kickline team will perform during intermission.
Through events such as Color Night, the Hicksville High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) is able to offer 10, $400 scholarships each year. To be eligible for a scholarship, a student must have at least an 85 grade point average, be community-minded and active in the school community through clubs, sports or the fine arts as well as other specific criteria.
"When color night started, the idea was to bring the students, teachers, administrators and parents together for a fun evening," Callari said. "The outcome of scholarship money was a bonus that has now become an annual event for the high school."
Through various fundraisers the Hicksville school district raised over $25,000 in scholarship monies last year. Last year's Color Night raised more than $1,500. "Whatever money we raise benefits the scholarship fund," said Callari. "If we only raise $100, its a $100 more than we had before."
General admission for Color Night is $3 per person and all proceeds go toward the Hicksville High School PTSA Scholarship Fund. For more information, call Hicksville High School at 733-6621.
