The Chamber might have started the flag program years ago and we might raise the money (from the residents of Hicksville donations) to purchase the flags but through the combined efforts of many organizations, the "Flags Fly High In Hicksville." Without combined efforts, Hicksville would not get accomplished what it does.
In fact, while we are recognizing groups, the poles and hardware also came from the residents in a way. The Chamber received a check from Hicksville's 350th anniversary committee and Louis Seplavy, of the American Legion purchased all of the hardware and poles that Hicksville needed with these funds. When we could not get any results in getting stanchions fixed, Louis made a phone call and the deed was done. Hicksville hasn't had this many flags flying in years. They look fantastic!
I must thank the men, women and families of all of the groups that install and take down the flags during the year. Personal time is taken from holidays, birthdays, barbecues, etc. to install, take down and store our flags in all kinds of weather.
Groups involved include: Republican Club, Girl Scouts of America, Rotary Club, Elks Club, American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Chairman Charlie Montana, a Chamber/Kiwanian, has been the organizer of this program for years.
