Hicksville's veterans paid solemn tribute to our country's fallen soldiers in a Memorial Day weekend program at Farmingdale's Air Power Museum.
Echoes of World War II's American sacrifices were heard vividly at the memorial ceremonies in the great hangar of the museum on Friday. Helping to usher in the Memorial Day weekend's observances were Commander John Mauro and members of the Charles Wagner Post 421 of the American Legion.
Featured speakers for the day's ceremonies were: Arnold Bocksel, a U.S. Army survivor of the Bataan Death March and three and a half years captivity in Japanese hard labor prisoner camps, in Manchuria; Army Air Force bombardier, Tom Costa, a member of the team of airman trained to deliver the atomic bomb, in the U.S. effort to end the Pacific war, in 1945.
An aerial fly-over salute at the Calverton U.S. National Cemetery had to be canceled due to the heavy cloud cover and poor visibility. The program had among its audience military re-enactor unit members in World War II uniforms and various representatives of the Nassau County American Legion, including Past Deputy National Commander John Tipping, P.C.C., Veterans of Foreign Wars and Pearl Harbor Survivor Association members.
