LIPA Offers 'Torchiere Trade-In' at Broadway Mall
In an effort to promote energy efficiency and safety in area homes, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is encouraging area residents to replace their dangerous, energy inefficient halogen torchiere lamps with new ENERGYSTAR models at the Broadway Mall in Hicksville through Sunday, Oct. 15.

EPA Will Clean Hicksville Superfund Site
After its 15-year investigation of the Hooker Chemical/Ruco Polymer Superfund site in Hicksville, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will clean up contaminated groundwater and soil beneath the facility. The Hooker/Ruco site is located on New South Road, just north of the LIRR line.

Golf Tourney at Cantiague Park
Due to rain, only 14 men showed up to play for the Cantiague Park Senior Men's Golf League's bi-monthly tournament Oct. 5. Ted Marukawa shot his handicap; eight other golfers shot one stroke over their handicaps for a net score of 31; and Clarence Leder walked home with three trophies, one for longest drive, one for closest to the pin and one for second low in Flight B.

Hicksville Stars Shine
The Hicksville Stars Boys U9 Team recently played in the North Hempstead Cup Columbus Day weekend. On the first day of tournament play, the Stars played the Rosedale United team, beating them 3-0. The Stars defeated the North Shore Storm 3-1 in the second game and beat the Manhasset Strikers by a goal. On day two, the Stars defeated the Westside Soccer Club of Manhattan 3-0.
