At this time I would like to write about Tom Bruno and the Hicksville Youth Council. I feel close to them, not just because I live in the neighborhood, but I have known Tom since he was a child. I also feel a personal attachment to the great work done by Tom and his staff, whether it is counseling, athletics, fund-raisers or helping others.
When I was in school a very long time ago there was no youth council or fine person as I have known and found in Tom Bruno, who loves people so much that he will do all in his power to help. He really listens to you, understands and is truly concerned about you.
When I pass by the council, the kids outside look happy to be there and with each other. If Tom is out there with them I know that they are in good hands. What these kids say at the HYC is confidential and they don't need to be afraid or lonely.
Although I have been single all of my life, I can feel for and with those young people, whether it is problems with school, home or making friends. I had many problems in school and felt very unhappy. I was diagnosed with polio as a teenager. When it was discovered that I had polio my teacher didn't want me to come back to class and many parents told their children not to bother with me. It created a terrible panic and I suffered for a long time. For the most part it was family, a couple of teachers and the principal who supported me back in 1947.
Now, the Hicksville Youth Council, which has been a vital and valuable part of our community, may have to close due to lack of funding. If this happens we all suffer as it will leave a huge void in our community that cannot be filled.
If it is possible and we can send a donation, whatever we can afford, perhaps the Hicksville Youth Council will be with us for many years to come, helping our young people, our future adults and citizens. Let's make 2000 a very happy year for Tom Bruno and the Hicksville Youth Council. We thank you, Tom, and the Hicksville Youth Council for everything.
