After winning the Notre Dame 2nd Annual Christmas Tournament, the Holy Family 8th grade basketball team might find itself off the list of teams competing in next year's tournament. That is because the team has participated in the first two tournaments and has won the championship on both occasions.
Holy Family opened the tournament with a hard-fought 37-27 victory over the host team. The victory was keyed by Lou Sullo (12 points, 10 rebounds), John Kishanuk (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Justin Rogich (8 points, 8 rebounds) as they dominated the scoring and backboards.
The championship game was decided early when Holy Family's full court press rattled St. Hedwig's backcourt, enabling Holy Family to race to a 31-9 halftime lead. The defensive catalysts were Mike Pesale (1 points, 4 steals), Steven Curcio (6 points, 4 steals) and Mike Weiss (7 points, 3 steals). The backboards were controlled by Thomas Oswald (4 points, 6 rebounds), Brian Garriques (8 points, 7 rebounds) Justin Rogich (7 points, 7 rebounds) and Mike Hebron (2 points, 5 rebounds). Rob DeGennaro led both teams with six assists. John Kishanuk led Holy Family's scoring attack with 12 points while the versatile Lou Sullo (9 points, 12 rebounds) not only hit the game's only three-pointer but garnered tournament MVP honors for the second consecutive year.
