It appears from Joe Mondello's Dec. 10 editorial that the Republican party still has its blinders on. Mr. Mondello touts the Oyster Bay Town Supervisor as a model of fiscal responsibility. How has Mr. Mondello been able to ignore the $24 million deficit that Oyster Bay residents are facing?

In addition to raising taxes this year, the town is now in the process of floating $24 million dollars in loans, at a one year cost to the taxpayer of $1.2 million to partially close the deficit until $16 million in proceeds of environmentally sensitive town owned lands can be realized. But this still leaves an $8 million deficit, for which the taxpayers will be responsible. Is this what he calls "fiscal management with tight fisted precision"? One time revenue hits are still being used to cover up for years of fiscal mismanagement under Republican-controlled administrations.

Mr. Mondello needs to wake up and realize the voters are no longer interested in party rhetoric, they want results. It's no accident that Democrats won with outstanding support from the electorate this year in Oyster Bay. Voters sent a message that they will no longer tolerate waste of their tax dollars at any level.
